Roots & Branches 42: Germaine Bazzle Special

The great musician, singer, and educator Germaine Bazzle is another wonder of New Orleans. At age 87 she performs two sets every Sunday with her 21st-century band of Larry Sieberth piano, Peter Harris bass, and Simon Lott drums. Join us in our first hour with her as Germaine tells of her childhood in the 7th Ward and the then-new Lafitte housing projects—“Tennis, Swimming, Second-Lines”—to her student days at Xavier prep and learning to scat from ebop instrumentals and her first gigs. She sings “One of Those Things”, “Route 66”, “Mood Indigo” and “There Is No Greater Love.” We also hear Bunk Johnson, Sidney Bechet, Papa Celestine, Ella Fitzgerald with the Chick Webb Orchestra, Charlie Parke’s Re-Boppers, J.J. Johnson, Woody Herman’s Third Herd, Stan Getz, Carmen McRae, and June Christy.
