John Sinclair Radio Show 787: Happy New Year’s

Episode 787 was scheduled to be broadcast from the Grand Opening of the new John Sinclair Café in Dr. Bob’s Psychedelic Healing Shack at Woodward and Goldengate in the north end of Detroit, but I ended up having too much fun to remember to make the radio show on the spot, so I’m following up on it now from Dr. Bob’s garage down the street where I’m sleeping at night and trying to catch up on the second day of the new year. Next week I’ll have a special show featuring Robert Jr.Whitall & Sugar Mae Owens and their guests, and then we intend to broadcast this show “live” from the John Sinclair Café every Monday night at 9;00 pm EST into the foreseeable future. Since it’s a new year and Mardi Gras is right around the cornder, let’s hear some Wild Indian music to start the year off right with a tribute to the music and genius of my late, great Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias with an hour of their finest recordings.

Roots & Branches 27: The Black Pope

Shelley Pope was a popular R&B disc jockey and flamboyant personality throughout the South who spent a couple of stints in New Orleans. My pal Jerry Brock, co-founder of WWOZ-FM in New Orleans, turned me on to the Black Pope and circulated a tape of some of his most outrageous programs back in the 1980s that blew a lot of people’s minds. I recently found in my achives about 90 minutes of Black Pope excerpts from WNNR Radio in New Orleans and I’ve edited them down to make this final edition of Roots & Branches for 2018. I can’t identify the musical selections, but the Black Pope experience is something to behold.
