Posted on May 1, 2019May 7, 2019Roots & Branches 45: May Day Special May 1st is Workers’ Day around the world. It came about as such through Communists and Knights of Labor and International Workers of the World (the great, old Wobblies)—and all like that. Pagans celebrated renewal and the promise of crops around this time. In Haiti May 1st is the Day of Agriculture. There the loa particularly celebrated on this Day is Kouzin Zaka, patron saint of peasants. Kouzin Zaka wears a straw hat. Kouzan Zaka swings a brilliant sash from his waist. Kouzan Zaka may smoke the big cigar from the tobacco that he raises. He shares fruits of the earth and his brothers’ and sisters’ labor from his sack of hemp and he and she and they will have a little whiskey too, this Day. Freedom is another name for the justice we have when we gain our fair share of the fruits of our labors. May 1st happens with no mansions on the hill. There is no high and low but only us. We’ll hear selections from Blind Wlllie Johnson, Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer, Bob Marley, Laura Nyro, Cyndi Lauper, Langston Hughes, the Pharoah Sanders Quartet, Anya Parampil & Tucker Carlson of Fox News, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars, Los Bunkers of Chile, Don Paul & Cacri Jazz, Boukman Eksperyans, and Tennessee Williams. This May Day Special of May 4th, in truth, is dedicated to a dear friend of mine and of many, many more—the novelist, poet, teacher and all-round bosom inspiration Chuck Kinder, Charles Alfonso Kinder of West Virginia and Diane Cecily and of his brother and sister, mother and father and Janet too. Surely Chuck will forever wave his hand like a wand around kitchen tables with a “Z’ZZZ” in concert with the TV. Dear Chuck passed from this Life yesterday. He’d recovered miraculously once, twice, three times—like Muhammad Ali a champion—to give us real poetry. Giant Death! Hot Jewels! Poetry individual, deep, kind and wise as he’d become Dear Chuck!
