I’m celebrating the 95th birthday of Thelonious Monk on this week’s Ancestor Worship program in 2012, recorded at my sister Kathy’s house in Hamden CT on October 10, the day Monk appeared on Earth in 1917. The first cut features the historic performance by the Miles Davis All Stars at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival with Monk on piano, long legendary but only now available for our listening pleasure. The program continues with a series of Monk’s recordings for Prestige Records in 1953-54, several also featuring Miles Davis, and the pianist’s initial presentation of his brilliant ballad called “Pannonica” on Riverside Records in 1957.
