Part 3 of our investigation into the recordngs made by John Coltrane and his Quartet for the Atlantic label during 1959-61, taken from the box set called The Heavyweight Champion, including tonight’s selections from the albums Giant Steps (recorded May 4-5, 1959) and Coltrane Jazz (recorded November 24 & December 2, 1959), with Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor accompanying Traene on the former and Wynton Kelly, Chambers and Jimmy Cobb on the latter. Note: I think I may have mis-filed from another Coltrane album the song in the last set called “While My Lady Sleeps,” but it sounds so good I’m leaving it in!
