Shelley Pope was a popular R&B disc jockey and flamboyant personality throughout the South who spent a couple of stints in New Orleans. My pal Jerry Brock, co-founder of WWOZ-FM in New Orleans, turned me on to the Black Pope and circulated a tape of some of his most outrageous programs back in the 1980s that blew a lot of people’s minds. I recently found in my achives about 90 minutes of Black Pope excerpts from WNNR Radio in New Orleans and I’ve edited them down to make this final edition of Roots & Branches for 2018. I can’t identify the musical selections, but the Black Pope experience is something to behold.
