Roots & Branches 32: Never Enough Beauty

Our final Hour in the company of David Amram includes four of his compositions—“En Memoria de Chano Pozo” from 1982, the Theme and Fanfare of David’s 2014 This Land symphonic tribute to Woody Guthrie, his “Waltz” from his score for Arthur Miller’s 1963 play After the Fall, and his theme for the 1962 movie Splendor in the Grass. We also hear Woody Guthrie interviewed on BBC in 1944, Pete Seeger speaking to English schoolchildren about Woody in 1964, and whole, still fresh, celebratory and anti-racist songs from Woody, Pete, and Dick and Mimi Farina. We also revisit the rhythmic fount of AfroCuban music for Celia Cruz with Johnny Pacheco and the Fania AllStars in Zaire and young drummers of Havana infused with 21st-century complexities on their drums-sets and timbales. We thank David Amram for the music, models, and great good humor that he gives us!
