Episode 756 is coming from the Radio Free Amsterdam studios in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, where I’m recovering this week from cataract surgery and paying homage to my friend, saxophonist, poet and composer Charles Neville of New Orleans’ Neville Brothers, or “Charlie the horn man” as his brother Aaron always called him, who passed away last week at the age of 79. We’ll hear music recorded with his band Diversity at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the early 1990s, a new poem in his honor composed and recited by Don Paul, music by Roger Lewis with Kirk Joseph from a recent Charles Neville memorial at Sweet Lorraine’s in New Orleans, selections by Charles with the Harvey Diamond Quartet and the Workingman’s Jazz Band, my recording of his poem “History 101” with Wayne Kramer and the Blues Scholars, and three cuts by the Neville Brothers from their album Live On Planet Earth.
