John Sinclair Radio Show 795: Hail King Zulu

Episode 795 is coming for the last time from the John Sinclair Café in the Psychedelic Healing Shack in the north end of Detroit, where I’ve been beaming out on Mondays since the new year started but now am forced to accept that my experiment with operating a marijuana-friendly coffeeshop in Detroit has met with an unfortunate and untimely end. If all goes well, my next show will be coming directly from New Orleans, but I’ve just today gotten word that my friend and host Jerry Brock has taken ill and won’t be able to accommodate me, so I have to find alternative lodgings at once or severely alter my travel plans and miss the Mardi Gras for the first time since 1981. In any case, the recordings live on and tonight we’ll have music from the Mardi Gras by Professor Longhair, Earl King, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Wild Magnolias, Dr. John, Roger & the Gypsies, Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters, Sammy Ridgely, Wardell & His Slammin’ Big Band, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbeque Swingers, Smokey Johnson, Snooks Eaglin, and the Guardians of the Flame. I appear at the beginning and then the sides take over completely. until the end

Retrospective 003: Me Got Fiyo: The Professor Longhair Centennial

Fess’, Professor Longhair is a Radio Free Amsterdam hall of fame artist, beloved by anybody who has visited New Orleans and experienced its rich musical underpinnings. We celebrate and honor Fess’ in many shows here.

In August 2018, an exhibit opened feauring. pianist Tom Worrell and conga drummer Uganda Roberts live. The exhibit is open until July 2019! The Lousiana State Museum writes:

“celebrates both the New Orleans Tricentennial and the Centennial of the birth of the most beloved and influential pianist in New Orleans history: Henry Roeland Byrd aka Professor Longhair. This exhibit showcases all things Fess starting with his origins and development to his early hits such as “Tipitinas,” “Mardi Gras In New Orleans,” and “Big Chief” to his 1970s comeback, his untimely death, and his continual presence in New Orleans since then.”

In another article featuring Me Got Fiyo, the Advocate  quotes Jazz Museum music curator and Radio Free Amsterdam DJ, David Kunian:

“he took very different strains of music and combined them into something uniquely New Orleans and uniquely his. And he changed the way everyone plays the piano here.”
