Roots & Branches 31: Soul Language

“Soul Music, Soul Language…. That’s Some Deep Stuff”: Composer, conductor, performer David Amram, 88 years young, speaks to us in this second hour of Soul music and Soul language and we go around the world, we hear Itzhak Perlman and the Zohar Israel Orchestra, a Muslim Call to Prayer, and Choral Scholars of University College, Dublin. We hear one track from Thelonious Monk and two from Bud Powell. We hear Jack Kerouac reading from his ‘Railroad Earth’ over music from the 21st-century Cinematic Orchestra, thanks to the 21st-century sharer and phenom ‘Aficionado Joe’. We hear from David about Cuba in 1977 and 2018 and how musicians there also transformed him. We hear from Los Munequitos de Matanza, from Gonzalo Rubalcaba, from the Cuban All-Stars with the then 11-year-old timbalero Yulien Oviedo, and we close with David’s “beautiful come-round” to New Orleans, leading to Sarah Elizabeth Charles of Haiti and the U.S. and her “Bells” with Christian Scott aTundé Adjuah.
