THE GROOVE YARD 203 – BLOW MR. DEXTER

George Klein presents the first hour of a feature on tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, focusing on his early recordings in the 1940s that show the then-new influence of bebop combined with elements of rhythm & blues. The recordings were made for release as 78 rpm singles under his ownname and as by Bud Powell, Leo Parker, Fats Navarro, and Wardell Gray. The appearance of Dexter’s name in many of the song titles was the idea of the record producer, who thought it was a way to get publicity for the young musician.
